Letter to Disciples No.124: WHO SHOULD WE FEEL SAD AND SORRY FOR? ( Thư gửi các trò 124: CHẠNH LÒNG, MẶC CẢM CHO AI?)

Dear disciples!
I am writing this letter in response to the question of a M.H. During two months learning Protestantism to please his mother, he had witnessed frequent newcomers who came to join the community of religion every week. The other reason for this letter is because of M.T’s sharing about one book he has recently read about the development of Buddhism in the world which was described as being declined. According to him, more and more young people are saddened by realizing the different atmospheres between Buddhist temples and catholic or protestant churches. The first seems to be cold, deserted; while the latter seems to be vibrant and energetic which is full of young people in different types of decorous clothes.
Dear disciples!
I would like to recommend that you should give up the thoughts that the religions which attract a lot of followers are all good. Frequent registration by new followers to Protestantism, or Catholicism does not reflect the true nature of the phenomenon. I would like to ask you one question, among those who registered as new followers, how many of them gave up after one week, one month or one year because of feeling unsatisfied? Do you know the exact statistic? Naturally, acts that were rooted by unrighteous motives using “figurative language”, “flattery”, “subtle suggestion”, “tricky talks”, “secretly hope for being repaid” won’t stay for long. Therefore, a Buddhist teacher often avoids these types of medium while propagating Dharma. It is specified in the 12th vow, among 46 minor mistakes of Mahayana Buddhism. For that reason, you should be proud that Buddhism is a self-enlightening path in which the followers are not lured, forced or attached by any possible means. The main principle while propagating Dharma of Buddhist teachers is SELF-ENLIGHTENING, ENLIGHTENING OF OTHERS, FULL ENLIGHTENMENT. It means, in the first stage, the practitioners start to acknowledge the right views; in the second stage, because of gaining merits and immeasurable benefits from deeper understanding and right practices, they wish to propagate Dharma to others sentient beings; and that makes a stepping stone for them to achieve full enlightenment in the third stage.
“ENLIGHTENING” means being enlightened to recognize the nature of phenomena, without being disturbed by pressures, constraints, or forces.
You should understand that doing something by self-motive is a lot more difficult than being forced to do it by external factors. This is the reason Buddhist followers are less than other religions! However, instead of maintaining the inferiority complex or feeling sorry, you all should nurture the holy pride because Buddhism is only reserved for those who started with self-enlightening.
Dear disciples!
There are several religions that attracts billions of followers such as Muslim, Catholicism. Have you ever wondered, if those religions do not embrace any transcendent doctrines and sublime spiritual effects, how could they attract that many followers? It is not right! You should not reason that way! It is definitely right that noble teachings cannot be one-size-fit-all and attractive to normal people, let alone mediocre individuals. Similarly, Buddhist teachings are inconceivable (unable to think and discuss by trivial thoughts), Dharma practices are skillful means that help the practitioners to achieve ultimate purpose; how come normal people (who are poor in predestined affinity and merits accumulated from their previous lives) set foot in the path of Enlightenment path? There are resembled examples that can be found in reality. For example, symphony is considered as a high-end music, which cannot be played and listened to by “anyone”. Or the classical music pieces that were written by Trinh, Ngo, Vu, Tu, Chuan are often filtered by a specific type of listeners, it is not that everyone can really enjoy those types of music. Similarly, articles on tabloid newspapers which are presented with hot headlines, and written in a sloppy way are often easier to approach a mass of readers than other mainstream newspapers. Why? People tend to direct their interest to entertaining topics, rather than intellectual topics, they often find it more comfortable to listen and read fast-writing which provide instant updates on life stories, rather than explore thought-provoking themes.
Try to put yourself in this situation in which you have to make a choice between two scenarios. The first scenario, you will be killed, exiled, or snubbed by those who are your closest people such as family, relatives. The second scenario, you must follow a religion which was suggested by them to avoid being killed, exiled or snubbed. Which option will you choose? Those are devious twists that can easily be found in several religions nowadays. They have been using those subtlest tactics, even many other cruel and ignoble tactics to add more followers. So what is the truth behind their propagating motive? In the name of “scarifying life for the religion”, they launched many cruel, unreasonable “holy wars” that brought deaths to hundreds of millions of people. Those naive people sacrificed their lives just for meaningless wars. In the name of “civilization”, they started colonialism, they colonized many nations and they took away many lives and greedily exploited many innocent, harmless people. Behind these tragedies, it is the shadow of those “spiritual advisors”.
On the one hand, they keep spreading words of humanity and love inside their sacred temples. On the other hand, their actions outside the temples were known with “narrow-minded”, “unfair”, “brutal” tricks, just because people refused to follow, or showed a small hint of opposing their religions. They always claimed in the name of fairness, but they established congregations, reinforced their religious power by unreasonable severe regulations, then purposely created complicated religious routines; which has no difference to a singer who has a bad voice, therefore, she tried to decorate herself as much as possible to attract the audience’s eyes. Furthermore, they spent money from their religion’s fund as bait to seduce potential followers who are poor and pathetic, or those who are at the edge of their lives.
In the modern age, freedom and democracy are considered broadly as typical standards for a civilized society, therefore, they dare not to do whatever they want like they did before. So that they began the trickiest possibility to create attachment within their followers’ relatives and families. For example, they create the tradition of having a patron/patroness, which is actually an indirect means to “squeeze the headband”, and to reinforce the attachment to the followers. Or one-religion marriage tradition which requires one should convert their partner to the same religion before getting married. That’s how they consolidate their scope of religious rules and regulations! Ten centuries ago, developed countries were golden soil to grow “religious mushrooms”. Nowadays, these countries became utterly discontented with all religions that revealed a lack of freedom and democracy, opposed to science principles, fabricated ridiculous fictions, caused many unrecoverable sins, and involved in most controversial subjects. Facing undeniable accusations, they started to show some self-respect by officially admitting all the wrongdoings they had done. By sending out an apology, they were expecting sympathy and tolerance from their followers in 2000. After being exposed, they switched the target to other countries with more potential followers, such as Latin America, Africa, and Asia.
Dear disciples!
Imagine that you are adopted into a rich and famous family which has many kids. Later on, you unexpectedly recognized that they bring you up for the sake of their own fame (of being benevolent). Since then, your freedom will be gradually “enslaved” to an orbit in which you are attached by unreasonable rules. They took it as an excuse under a well-known saying that said “when in Rome, do as the Romans do”. In that family, the father is the powerful owner who has extreme power to make all decisions, no matter what he says, or does. Then, do you still hold the pride of being adopted? Do you really want to stay for long?
In another scenario, you are adopted into a smaller family, fewer children, and this family is not that well-known. However, you have all your freedom to make decisions and do anything that you favor. You are not attached by any strict and unreasonable rules, you are not supervised by the arms of any “patron”. In that family, there are no parents, grandparents; there is only cohabitants who share genuine sentiment and care, though it is unavoidable to have small clashes sometimes. Are you still the one being saddened or feeling sorry in that family?
Similarly, as a Buddhism follower/practitioner, we should acknowledge the true value of Buddhism, that sublime and immeasurable value won’t move an inch even though Buddhism may have fewer followers than other religions. In a family, it is unnecessary to have many children to be happy. A small family with fewer children, but the children are growing up into good people is much better than a big family with many children, but they are spoiled and bring about disasters. There is one related saying in the army that said “Number is not so important in armies as quality”! In the ideology of true dignity, there is an old saying that said “The joy of those fool people make the wise ones worried for them (for the fool)”. Likewise, though all religions have their own strengths, they are still locked in samsara; that’s why you should direct your compassion to them and express your concern for them! 2000 years ago, the Buddha decided to abandon those religions, and stepped into deep forest to contemplate on the ultimate truth. What is the meaning behind the Buddha’s decision? Finally, I would like to conclude by an objective statement that is widely accepted:
It is not by accident that the International Coalition for Religious and Spirituality (ICARUS), based in Geneva Switzerland granted the award “The best religion in the world” to Buddhism on 15 July 2009.
You should not grow the inferiority complex, or feel sorry by any comparison. You should be proud of being a Buddhist, who has a high and noble position; especially you will be freed from samsara while non-Buddhism will keep circulating from life to life, despite their practice diligently for thousands of lives. IF YOU ARE FEELING SORRY OR GROWING THE INFERIORITY COMPLEX, IT SHOULD BE RESERVED FOR NON-BUDDHISM. I pray for all sentient beings to attain the Buddha nature’s happiness.

  10. Cao Diệu Chánh Tấn says:

    Dear holy Guru!
    I have read this article.
As holy Guru has mentioned in this article the true meaning of self-enlightening, enlightening of others, full enlightenment includes 3 stages. In first stage, the practitioner start to acknowledge the right views; in second stage, after gaining merits and immeasurable benefits from deeper understanding and right practices, the practitioner wish to spread Dharma to other sentient beings to help them achieve the true happiness; and that lead them to achieve full enlightenment in third stage.
I understand the number of followers do not reflect the true nature of phenomenon. These numbers do not represent the quality. Insteads, In some areas, the increase of these numbers come from subtlest tactics. For example, they use money as bait to seduce potential followers who are poor, pathetic, or those who are at the edge of their life or they use external forces hidden under the one-religion marriage tradition to reinforce others to follow. However, these relationships of life-long friends and relatives or money (wealth accumulated with sweat and tears) must eventually abandon when we reach the gate of death. Thus, using these factors to increase the followers does not lead them to true happiness, which is to be free from suffering of this samsara world. Furthermore, Master Gyalse Tokme Zangpo has taught in “37 practices of all the Bodhisattvas’ ‘ : Trapping within the Samsara, the ordinary gods are incapable of helping me. Take refuge in the Three Jewels – the true reliance. That is the practice of all Bodhisattvas”.
Therefore, I understand I should nurture the holy pride as a Buddhist practitioner, who started with self-enlightening without being disturbed by pressures, constraints, or forces.
Thank you holy Guru for your teaching and guidance. May holy Guru have good health and live long for the sake of all sentient beings.
May the epidemic of Covid-19 come to end soon.
May all sentient beings attain the happiness of Buddha’s nature.
    Om Mani Padme Hum.
