Letter to Disciples No.32: PRAISING THE GREAT VOW OF AVALOKITESHVARA BODHISATTVA ( Thư gửi các trò số 32: Tán thán đại nguyện của Quán Âm Bồ tát)

Letter to Disciples No.32: PRAISING THE GREAT VOW OF AVALOKITESHVARA BODHISATTVA
Dear disciples,
I have seen many disciples of Song Nguyen Tantra House who praised the great vow of Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva; however, they admitted that they did not have a thorough understanding of the vow. They humbly request me to provide further explanation. If the focus is on the sublime meaning, it must take me many pages to give a detailed explanation. Therefore, it is better that I will give a lecture on this topic. Meanwhile, I would like to draft an outline for you to easier understand Avalokiteshvara’s teaching on His vow.

Avalokiteshvara

As you might know, Dawa Drolma was a great female teacher of Tibet Buddhism, and the mother of Chagdud Tulku Rinpoche. She was known as a delog, who had crossed the threshold of death to Avalokiteshvara’s Potala Palace and returned. While being there, Dawa Drolma heard Avalokiteshvara’s Great vow and she was recommended to come back and teach the others in Tibetan. Avalokiteshvara’s Great Vow was presented in The Pure Mind Dharma ritual of practice and continuance, or in the book “One life, One mantra”. I highly emphasized the importance of reading and understanding it thoroughly.

Delog Dawa Drolma, a great female teacher of Tibet Buddhism, had crossed the threshold of death to Avalokiteshvara’s Potala Palace

Now I am going to explain different aspects that were mentioned in the Vow, which will be divided in separated parts as following:
I. Avalokiteshvara’s meaning in the appearance
Avalokiteshvara’s Guru: The Great Compassion
Who is He? He is the representative of all Jinas (Skt) (all the Buddhas)
Who is He? He is the King of the universe Lokeshvara.
Who is He? He is the Liberated One who is naturally free from samsara circle.
Who is He? He is the Great Compassion One, because:
His salvation domain: covers all sentient beings from six samsara realms, those who are the objects of His compassion (who pray for His blessings)
Special objects: those who are under reduced circumstances, and those who are unable to protect themselves (it is necessary to understand these object’s characteristics).
The means that are used to save sentient beings:
(1) The thorough eyes which reflect the True Nature
(2) Always listening to the sentient beings’ prayer
(3) Thorough understanding

II. The purpose of Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva’s salvation.
To escort sentient beings to the Pure Land by the immense power of His compassionate vow.

III. Spiritual conditions
A. Sufficient conditions:
Pay homage, respect, faith and devotion (theories)
(How to pay homage, respect, faith and devotion?)
B. Necessary conditions:
(1) Recite His name (2) Visualize His holy appearance (3) Recite the Mani mantra (Om Mani Padme Hum) (4) Perform spiritual practices (5) See Him (6) Listen to His voice (7) Reminisce about Him (in regard to body, speech, mind) (8) Communicate with Him (or the Guru in reality, Avalokiteshvara in the state of dreaming).

Om Mani Padme Hum

IV. Reality
A. Sentient beings are slipping out of His reach, out of His vision because they are hindered by:
(1) Evil karmic hindrances (What are evil karmic hindrances? Those are the actions of body, mind and speech that fall out of the right orbit of Dharma) (2) the habit of being stubborn (which is influenced by the tradition of ignorance) (3) Evil thoughts (which are all about being swayed by Five Desires to the extent of being over-used).
B. Consequences: They fall into the dark abyss of three evil paths. The door of hell realm is opened for them because their minds are like a cave that faces directly to the north. They manifested themselves through these following signals:
(1) The lifespan keeps being shorten
(2) They are accustomed to false speech which grows from their defraud
(3) They eat impure food because of their wrong livelihood
(4) Their views are demoralised for falling into the abyss of Nihilism and Eternalism.

V. Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva’s teaching
A. Theories
(1) Precious human body
(2) Contemplate on the Impermanence
(3) The purpose of practicing Dharma
(4) Prohibit of “giving free rein to one’s emotion” and self-indulgence which end up growing wrong actions of body, mind, speech.

Luxuriant tree which nurtures the Buddhist’s destiny now and forever (peaceful happiness in this life, eternal happiness in the next life).

B. Practices: Accumulate merits by growing the tree of virtue.
(1) Fertilizer and water to the virtue tree: Mindfulness (Guru, the Buddha, Dharma, Sangha); Discernment (avoiding sowing negative seeds, therefore not reaping the bad consequences); Concentration (keep being awakened on the action of body, speech and mind).
(2) Support the virtue tree’s growth: Contemplating on impermanence
(3) Cultivate the virtue tree by your immense devotion
(4) The root of virtue tree: the faith and taking refuge
(5) The heartwood or virtue tree: Bodhicitta
(6) Branches and twigs of virtue tree: Six paramitas
(7) Leaves of virtue tree: Happily praise/rejoice the good deeds of others
(8) Flower of virtue tree: Fours ways of leading human beings to emancipation
(9) Fruit of virtue tree: Ultimate wisdom

C. Good outcomes
Luxuriant tree which nurtures the Buddhist’s destiny now and forever (peaceful happiness in this life, eternal happiness in the next life).

D. Bad consequences that are created by these following reasons:
(1) The virtue tree is dead because of these kinds of frost: a) denying the law of cause and effect b) Abandon Dharma practices c) Violate Buddhist commandments.
(2) The fruit of virtue tree will be rotten because of fierce hail which are a) jealousy, hatred b) anger c) aggression
(3) The bugs that eat the root of virtue tree are fame and greed, which have no difference to household lifestyle (refer to The fourteen Grievous Failures of a Buddhist practitioner).
(4) The drought that withers the virtue tree is defaming Guru and Bodhisattva because of one’s arrogance and self-conceit, which will result in endless sufferings.

E. The solutions:
(1) Three types of transcendent wisdoms (Renunciation, Bodhicitta, Emptiness)
(2) Four noble characteristics (simple mindset in regard to Nisidana, medicine, accommodation, food)
(3) Hold precepts
(4) Rejoice others’ good deeds
(5) Contemplate on Impermanence
(6) Modest and respectful
(7) Keep in mind the teaching of “Middle way” (The mean between two extremes)
(8) Abandon self-indulgence of body, speech and mind

VI. The quintessence of Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva’s teaching
1. Practice: Recite the six-syllable mantra uninterruptedly, that is enough.
2. Visualization: Any sound can be heard is the sound of the mantra, all appearance is the form of Avalokiteshvara.
3. Not putting additional thoughts into the current situation
4. Transfer the merits: To transfer one’s accumulated merits to other sentient beings for their attaining Buddhahood in the future.

VII. Application in reality
1. Don’t be bothered by worldly affairs
2. Avoid being seduced by wrongdoings and the evil (for not reaping bad consequences)
3. Rejoice the happiness of being blessed in the present.
4. Generate Bodhicitta by all possible means.

VIII. Ultimate achievement
IN THE HOUR OF DEATH, WE ARE GOING TO BE ESCORTED BY THE BUDDHAS AND BODHISATTVAS TO THE PURE LAND.

IN THE HOUR OF DEATH, WE ARE GOING TO BE ESCORTED BY THE BUDDHAS AND BODHISATTVAS TO THE PURE LAND.

Dear disciples!
I have just drafted a detailed outline for you to understand more deeply about Avalokiteshvara’s teaching. You had better read thoroughly multiple times, I will give a more detailed lecture once Song Nguyen Tantra House in different places are gathered.
