THANH TRI – THE 4TH MIND DHARMA: “LOTUS WALKING DHARANI”. LESSON 5: UTILIZING END RESULT AS THE PATH, UTILIZING MEANS AS ULTIMATE PURPOSE (Luận giải đệ tứ tâm pháp Thanh Trí: Liên hoa bách bộ thần chú đà la ni, Bài 5: Lấy kết quả làm con đường, dùng phương tiện làm cứu cánh)

All mantras’ functions are based on the mechanism of “utilizing end result as the path” and “utilizing means as ultimate purpose”. Based on these principles, the 4th mind Dharma “Lotus Walking Dharani” combines both concentration meditation and insight meditation, and activates simultaneously both spiritual magical power and mind-transforming power. It is like with a full-designed car, one just needs to learn driving instead of doing research on the engine, spare parts, operation mechanism, etc. to produce a whole new car from scratch. Likewise, Mani mantra was composed from the state of Samadhi by Avalokiteshvara throughout countless number of meditation lives. As Buddhist practitioners following Avalokiteshvara, we are legitimate to inherit this Dharma treasure and the fruitful outcomes without turning back to the starting point. This is the optimal spiritual principle which is called “utilizing end result as the path”, and “utilizing means as ultimate purpose”. This treasure belongs to all Vajrayana Buddhist practitioners. In order to give a more profound understanding, I would like to explain further superior qualities of the Mani mantra (Om Mani Padme Hum).

The unique characteristic of all mantras are the principle of “Utilizing the end result as the path” and “utilizing means as ultimate purpose”

Mani mantra has six syllables, each has its own meaning and efficiency. While reciting this mantra, those syllables shall plait into a flower garland which decorates for the liberation. In Vajrayana Buddhism view, Mani mantra is understood by separate graphology as below:

Mani mantra

OM ( ), means body, speech and mind impure into the unity of Buddhism.

MANI ( ) , means precious jewel which generates from wisdom.

PADME ( ) , means inside the lotus, which connotes the great compassion that grows from one’s mind like a lotus blooming fr om the mud.

HUM ( ) , means the noble meaning of life.

Thus the six syllables mantraOM MANI PADME HUM can be interpreted as: “The jewel which is laid inside the lotus wisdom that helps me (the practitioner) to escape the mud of ignorance and achieve the noble meaning of my life”

The jewel which is laid inside the lotus wisdom that helps me (the practitioner) to escape the mud of ignorance and achieve the noble meaning of my life

According to the explanation ofHH The Dalai Lama XIV in the book named “Kindness Clarity and Insight” (issued by Thien Tri Thuc Publication):

OM : is composed of three pure letters: A, U, M which stand for the practitioner’s impure body, speech and mind; they also stand for the pure exalted body, speech and mind of a Buddha, which represents two adverse sides between confliction and Bodhi,  between Samsara and Nirvana.

MANI : means jewel, symbolizes the means of attaining liberation. Great compassion is a precious jewel that helps to fulfill all the wishes of sentient beings who aim to attain liberation for themselves and other sentient beings.

PADME : means lotus, symbolizes wisdom, because a lotus grows forth from mud but is not sullied by the faults of mud. Lacking wisdom, we cannot help facing troubles.

HUM : a symbol indicates unification of means and wisdom for the complete purification.

Thus, by practicing the unification of means and wisdom, we transform our impure body, speech and mind into the pure body, speech, and mind of a Buddha.

According to Mahasiddha Master Thangtong Gyalpo’s teaching:

Mahasiddha Master Thangtong Gyalpo

OM: including Five Dhyani Buddhas (Five Wisdom)

MANI: precious jewel which fulfills all the wishes

PADME: lotus flower

The combination of MANI and PADME accordingly means “Hail to the jewel in the lotus” which is another Avalokiteshvara’s name.

HUM: illustrates the function of protecting all beings from six realms.

Six realms of samsara

The essence of mantra which is recited from either speech or mind shall gradually transfer Avalokiteshvara’s wisdom and compassion to the practitioners

In general, the meaning of the Mani mantra is: “I vow to my Guru who represents Five Buddha and Five Wisdoms, the hail to the Jewel in the lotus. Please bless all the beings from six realms to be free from the samsara”.

Mahasiddha Thangtong Gyalpo once affirmed that Mani mantra can be understood in various ways. It is not necessary to acknowledge the meaning while reciting the mantra. In a natural way, the essence of the mantra recited from either speech or mind shall gradually transfer Avalokiteshvara’s wisdom and compassion to the practitioners. Afterwards, the practitioners will spread accordingly to other sentient beings who are connecting to their current life or previous lives.

In general, at the moment one recites the Mani mantra, he closes the doors to the six realms and navigates his spiritual fortune to a pure realm of Buddha. However, the essence of Mani mantra cannot be separated from its special honored linage one, Avalokiteshvara. In August of 1981, His Holiness the Dalai Lama XIV gave a series of lectures at Harvard University. On that occasion, he affirmed that reciting the mantra while visualizing Avalokiteshvara shall definitely multiply the efficiency. What is Avalokiteshvara visualization? It means the practitioners  visualize Avalokiteshvara’s holy appearance in front of them by activating their imagination, at the same time reciting the mantra (Extracted from “One life, One mantra”, written by author Nguyen Thanh).

“One life, One mantra”

However, in order to make it easier for the readers to remember, I would like to summarize transcendent strengths of Mani mantra as follows:

  1. One time reciting the Mani mantra is equal to reciting 12 sutta pitaka.
  2. One time reciting Mani mantra generates positive energy to sentient beings from six realms as they will receive the seed of attaining liberation in the future.
  3. Mani mantra gradually forms right speech (Samyagvāk) for the practitioner, therefore the practitioner’s appearance will increasingly become radiant, imposing and the compassion will grow day by day with diligent practice.
  4. Chronic diseases will be cured until complete recovery. In case of terminal illnesses which cannot be cured, though the practitioner who recites Mani mantra still feels the physical pain, his mind won’t be bothered from sadness and panic as previously.

From these above explanations, we understand the way practicing the 4th mind Dharma is one illustration of “spiritual magical power” through the principle of “utilizing end result as the path”.

Practicing the 4th mind Dharma is one illustration of “spiritual magical power” through principle of “utilizing the end result as the path”

This is the mantra’s unique power which can transform flexibly for the benefit of all sentient beings. Regarding “mind transforming power”, after the Mani mantra is recited for years, sublime attributes from the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas will naturally transmit to the practitioners, based on the principle of “A man is known by the company he keeps”. It is marvelous that compassion and wisdom are automatically established through reciting the mantra without focusing on particular subjects as the meditation practice in Mahayana Buddhism.

    Dear holy Guru,
I am appreciative when reading your teaching and explanation about the effectiveness of the 4th Mind Dharma “Lotus Walking Darani”. Your innovation utilizing end result as the path brings the worldly success and spiritual achievements to all learners. I have learnt that it is your wisdom, bodhicitta and effort putting on the benefits of all sentient beings. For a long time, many practitioners know the phrase “utilizing end result as the path” but not many practitioners know how to do it clearly and effectively for the sake of all sentient beings. Only you provide the full-option luxury car for learners to drive comfortably and conveniently to the city of liberation.
However, to use this wonderful car, the practitioners need to get the key and power to operate it. Guru devotion is the key, power made from the pure perception of learners towards Guru. The more devotion the practitioners make, the more power they get for the speed of the car towards destination.
Thank you so much for your precious teachings. I am happy to praise your compassion and wisdom and I rejoice with the good deeds of Mat Tú translation.
May you have good health and live long for the sake of all sentient beings.
May Mat Tu get all her righteous wishes on the path of liberation.
May all sentient beings attain the happiness of Buddha nature.
May covid 19 pandemic end soon.
    Om Mani Padme Hum.

  5. Tantra Dharmapabodhisita says:

    Dear H.H. Guru,

In this article, our Guru told us that all mantras’ functions are based on the mechanism of “utilizing result as the path” and “utilizing means as ultimate purpose”.

According to these principles, the fourth mind Dharma “Lotus Walking Dharani” emphasize on both concentration meditation and insight meditation, and activates both magical spiritual power and mind-transforming power simultaneously. Mani mantra was composed of the state of Samadhi by Avalokiteshvara throughout a countless number of meditation lives. As Buddhist practitioners following Avalokiteshvara, we are legitimate to inherit this Dharma treasure and the fruitful outcomes without turning back to the starting point. This is the optimal spiritual principle which is called “utilizing result as the path”, and “utilizing means as ultimate purpose”. This treasure belongs to all Vajrayana Buddhist practitioners.

Guru has given a marvellous explanation of the superior qualities of the Mani mantra (Om Mani Padme Hum) for our understandings. Guru is so kind, and he always takes care of all of us for explaining everything in an in-depth manner. As now we are familiar with Mani Mantra and Lotus walking Dharni. The Mani mantra has four words: the meaning of these words are below given.

    1. The word OM means body, speech, and mind impure into the unity of Buddhism.
    2. The word MANI means precious Jewel, which generates wisdom.
    3. The word PADME means inside the lotus, which connotes the great compassion that grows from one’s mind like a lotus blooming from the mud.
    4. The word HUM means the noble meaning of life.

Thus the six syllables mantra OM MANI PADME HUM (ओं मणि पद्मे हूं) can be interpreted as: “The jewel which is laid inside the lotus wisdom that helps me (the practitioner) to escape the mud of ignorance and achieve the noble meaning of my life.”

Guru quoted H.H. Dalai Lama XIV’s explanation of Mani Mantra through the book entitled “Kindness Clarity and Insight.”

OM: Om is composed of three pure letters: A, U, M which stand for the practitioner’s impure body, speech and mind; they also stand for the pure exalted body, speech and mind of a Buddha, which represents two opposing sides between confliction and Bodhi, between Samsara and Nirvana.

MANI: Mani means Jewel, symbolizes the means of attaining liberation. Great compassion is a precious jewel that helps to fulfil all the wishes of sentient beings who aim to achieve liberation for themselves and other sentient beings.

PADME: Padme means lotus, symbolizes wisdom, because a lotus grows forth from mud but is not sullied by the faults of mud. Lacking wisdom, we cannot help facing troubles.

HUM: Hum a symbol indicates unification of means and wisdom for the complete purification.

Thus, by practising the unification of means and wisdom, we transform our impure body, speech and mind into the pure body, speech, and mind of a Buddha.

Guru also quoted Mahasiddha Master Thangtong Gyalpo for explaining the meaning of Mani Mantra. According to Mahasiddha Master Thangtong Gyalpo, the word OM refers to Five Dhyani Buddhas (Five wisdom), the term MANI refers to precious Jewel which fulfils all the wishes, the word PADME: means lotus flower and HUM illustrates the function of protecting all beings from six realms.

Finally, Guru concludes the meaning of the Mani mantra is: “I vow to my Guru, who represents Five Buddha and Five pearls of wisdom, the hail to the Jewel in the lotus. Please bless all the beings from six realms to be free from the samsara”. In general, at the moment one recites the Mani mantra, he closes the doors to the six realms and navigates his spiritual fortune to a pure realm of Buddha. However, the essence of Mani mantra cannot be separated from its unique honoured linage one, Avalokiteshvara. The practitioners visualize the Avalokiteshvara’s holy appearance by activating their imagination, at the same time reciting the mantra.

The summary of this chapter is insightful and knowledgeable for understanding the deepness of the Mani mantra. Guru summarized in four points.

    1. One time reciting the Mani mantra is equal to reciting 12 Sutta Pitaka.

    2. One time reciting Mani mantra generates positive energy to sentient beings from six realms as they will receive the seed of attaining liberation in the future.

    3. Mani mantra gradually forms right speech (Samyagvāk) for the practitioner; therefore, the practitioner’s appearance will increasingly become radiant, imposing, and compassion will grow day by day with diligent practice.

    4. Chronic diseases will be cured until complete recovery. In case of terminal illnesses which cannot be cured, though the practitioner who recites Mani mantra still feels the physical pain, his mind won’t be bothered from sadness and panic as previously.

    Om Mani Padme Hum!

    With regards

    Tantra Dharmapabodhisita
